Prague - A new institution focusing on the presentation of contemporary international art, architecture, and design will commence operations on Sunday in Prague's Holešovice. The aim of the DOX Center for Contemporary Art is to place Czech art within an international context through partnerships with foreign artistic institutions, said the center's director Leoš Válka to journalists today. The center is unique in that it is a private initiative. "The costs amount to 200 million crowns and everything has been financed from private sources. We are just applying for grants from the European Union," he told ČTK. "Contemporary art demands a great deal of variability in exhibition spaces that allow for monumental installations," Válka noted. The building, with a total interior area of 6,250 square meters, is designed as a modern multifunctional facility that meets this criterion. The architectural concept allows for several exhibitions to be installed simultaneously. The center includes eight separate exterior and interior spaces, an auditorium, a café, and plans for a restaurant and bookstore in the future. There will primarily be exhibitions of art from the United States and Europe, and in the future, also Asia. "Our goal is not to be ahead of our time; we are focused on contemporary artistic creation," Válka stated. "Representation of Czech artists will be about half and half with foreign artists," he added. The opening project of the new center is the exhibition Welcome to Capitalism! which will be accessible to the public from October 20 to February 8. It will mainly feature works by Spanish painter José-María Cano dedicated to the symbolism of the world of financial transactions. Czech artists Michael Bielicky and Dominik Lang will also be represented.
The author of this exceptional building is architect Ivan Kroupa (editor's note).
