Prague - The zoo in Prague-Troja is expected to have two main entrances in the future. A new entrance could be created near the planned gorilla pavilion in the upper part of the garden. During today’s meeting of the committee for infrastructure, technical equipment, and the environment of the Prague city council, Zoo Prague director Miroslav Bobek mentioned this without further details. This should ease traffic and visitors would be better spread throughout the entire area.
Currently, people gather in the lower part of the garden at the current main entrance, where they can arrive by car or city bus. Most visitors choose to drive to the zoo. "While in the past parking capacity filled up with 8,500 visitors, today it fills up with 5,000," Bobek stated. The zoo wanted to encourage people to use public transport, which is why they increased parking fees. There has also been consideration of creating a special entrance for cyclists near the Gočár houses, Bobek noted, adding that a large portion of visitors come to the zoo with children, making traveling by bus or bike not very convenient.
According to Bobek, there are plans for a parking ban near Troja Castle and at the same time an expansion of the parking lot in front of the zoo. It is intended to be deepened, thus not disturbing the character of the surroundings. It should also replace the parking spaces near Troja Castle, thereby adding additional spots.
According to Bobek, the zoo would need tram lines leading to the upper part of the area. He does not consider the proposed cable car construction, which is supposed to run from Podbaby to Bohnice, as an ideal solution.
The Prague zoo in Troja first opened its gates to visitors on September 28, 1931. Currently, it houses 676 species of animals, which are presented in 13 pavilions and over 150 exhibits. It is one of the most visited places in Prague. Last year, nearly one and a half million people visited, which was the third best result since its opening. This year, it welcomed its millionth visitor on August 20.
