Znojmo – The leadership of Znojmo plans to start revitalizing the oldest part of Freedom Square next spring, which is the northernmost part of the historic center. The project will include greenery and a fountain, which has never been here before, said Deputy Mayor Jiří Kacetl (For Znojmo) to CTK.
"Although we already have the building permit, the budget is still being prepared. We hope to announce the competition in October or November," Kacetl said.
The city is planning to modify the area from the intersection with Jesuit Street to the crossing near the remnants of the Upper Gate. "This part was developed in the second half of the 19th century after the demolition and filling of fortifications at the Upper Gate. The design was already given to the Tišnovka studio 15 years ago, minor modifications were made about eight years ago, and only under the previous city leadership did preparations continue. Unfortunately, there was no public discussion with the public. However, we had the architects show and explain the concept, and the entire space will be qualitatively improved," said Kacetl.
The surface will feature paving that people are used to from other parts of the urban heritage preservation area, as well as the furniture and lighting. In the central part, there will be greenery and a fountain, which sculptor Jaromír Gargulák envisioned as a modern interpretation of an ancient fountain, above which birds will fly as a symbol of freedom. "The original design included eight parking spaces near the fountain, which we decided to remove. There are plenty of parking spaces available next to the Municipal Baths and on the other side of the thoroughfare," Kacetl noted. Parking spaces will also be preserved at the edge of the revitalized area.
People can come to see the presentation of the planned project on Tuesday, October 8, at 5:00 PM in the lower hall of Znojemská Beseda at Masaryk Square. The Tišnovka studio has also contributed to the modifications of the Middle and Lower Park, the Kolonka locality, and the renovation of Komenského Square and adjacent streets in Znojmo.
