Brno - Unknown graffiti artists damaged one of Brno's architectural rarities last night - a public transport shelter, which is a miniature version of the "octopus" by the late architect Jan Kaplický. They displayed their two signatures, known as tags, on the bench in the structure. The damage has not yet been assessed. The stop was put into operation a month ago. Criminal investigators will be searching for the vandals, said the police spokesperson Denisa Kapitančíková to ČTK. The municipal police discovered the patterns on the bench on Monday around 8:00 PM. They attempted to locate the vandals immediately around the public transport stop but were unsuccessful. The offenders face prosecution for damage to property. "They should definitely expect that we will now monitor the stop and its surroundings more closely," the spokesperson added. The idea to use the design for the public transport stop in Brno-Lesná, intended for the National Library headquarters meant for Prague-Letná, came from student Martin Felgr. The stop was launched into operation on September 20. The new National Library building, set to be constructed according to Kaplický's design for two billion crowns, was meant to be built in Letná, Prague. However, in 2008, the government decided that the library would not be built due to unresolved land issues and financing. Additionally, the European Commission issued a statement that the competition was in violation of public procurement law.
