Drnovice (Zlínsko) - The Zlín Region would like to improve the promotion of the memorial to the victims of World War II in Ploština and better utilize its cultural and educational opportunities. In collaboration with the municipality of Drnovice, which is located nearby, and other municipalities of the Ploština microregion, it will strive to make it more attractive and present it to tourists. According to regional councilor Jindřich Ondruš (KDU-ČSL), the planned projects for the utilization of the memorial will require costs of approximately 6.5 million crowns. "Ploština is a significant place for us within the Zlín Region, referencing wartime events, and we are convinced that it should not disappear from the collective memory of people,” the councilor explained. The region will therefore seek modernization of the museum exhibition, establishment of a relaxation zone in the memorial area, and, not least, its promotion for tourism. The memorial to the anti-fascist resistance in Ploština commemorates the murder of the inhabitants of the Moravian settlement and its burning by the Nazis at the very end of World War II. It was built more than thirty years ago and has recently undergone a significant reconstruction. During it, the builders repaired the damage left by the ravages of time, and symbols of the communist regime - the five-pointed star, hammer, and sickle - were also removed. The region, together with the municipalities of the Ploština microregion, will now contribute financially not only to its maintenance but also to the further development of the memorial. Together, they will also try to obtain financial grants from European sources. The extinct clearing settlement of Ploština lay between the municipalities of Drnovice and Vysoké Pole. The Nazis burned it down because its inhabitants helped partisans during the war, and in the flames, 24 people lost their lives. Although several new houses were built for the survivors after the war, daily life never returned there. The dominant feature of the entire site is the memorial to the victims of World War II, and a chapel bearing the names of all the murdered inhabitants of the settlement commemorates the tragedy of April 19, 1945.
