Frýdek-Místek - Frýdek-Místek city councilors today approved the construction of a new multipurpose sports hall Polárka, which is also expected to serve as a cultural facility. The construction is estimated to cost nearly 290 million crowns, and the city plans to finance it with the help of loans. The new hall will be built northeast of the current hall and will have a capacity of 2500 spectators, said city spokesperson Jana Matějíková to ČTK.

"Polárka will offer not only an ice surface but also courts for badminton, table tennis, and a standalone accessible shooting range. There will be modern facilities for both athletes and performers, as well as visitors and staff. A restaurant overlooking the ice surface and a changing room for public skating with a skate rental will also be available,” said Mayor Michal Pobucký (ČSSD).
The costs for the construction of Polárka were estimated at 386 million crowns according to the project documentation. However, the price was successfully reduced by more than 100 million crowns in an electronic auction.
According to Matějíková, renovating the hall, which has been a dominant feature of the city for several decades, would be more expensive. The city also indicated that operational costs would be higher. The city plans to cover the construction of the new hall through loans. "The financing for the construction will initially be ensured by utilizing available funds from a revolving loan in the amount of 130 million crowns,” Matějíková stated. She added that the remaining part of the finances would also be covered by the loan. However, the city still intends to seek a provider for it.
Consequently, the original hall faces the threat of demolition, against which not only some architects but also a portion of the city's residents are protesting.
