The Czech Chamber of Architects (ČKA) recommended to the City Hall of Frýdek-Místek to reconsider the plan to demolish the multipurpose sports hall. The building is among the most significant sports facilities in the region and is an important symbol of the city. Its replacement with a multifunctional center is unlikely to be an adequate substitute for the loss of quality architecture.

The sports hall designed by architect Oskar Chmiel in the early 1970s has gradually become an icon of the city of Frýdek-Místek. It is admired by experts for its original construction, silhouette, and unconventional layout. It retains various values associated with neo-avant-garde tendencies of the 1960s and the form language of the 1970s and 1980s. Currently, the hall is in poor structural and technical condition, and its immediate surroundings are also unkempt. The city proposes to demolish the existing hall and replace it with a multifunctional center and a new hockey hall.

According to ČKA, the demolition of the structure is not the right course of action. They recommend reconstructing the building and thoughtfully integrating it into its surroundings. ČKA shares this position with Martin Strakoš from the National Heritage Institute in Ostrava, who writes in his statement: “Before making an irreversible decision (to demolish or not to demolish), it is essential to urgently evaluate the impacts of this decision on urbanism, on the sports infrastructure of the city, on the management of this location, and also how the potential loss of an important architectural symbol of Frýdek-Místek will affect the locality, as well as what architectural quality or lack thereof the city intends to use to compensate for this loss.”

The Czech Chamber of Architects also emphasizes the necessity of respecting the author's rights of the architectural design of the hall by Oskar Chmiel in accordance with copyright law. Similarly, ČKA recommends proceeding in the search for the most suitable solution for the entire site through an architectural competition, which would bring a larger number of specific proposals from which the city could choose. In fact, the same approach was taken in 1971 when the existing multipurpose sports hall was being built.
