Mikulov (Břeclavsko) - In Mikulov, a large-scale restoration of the neglected castle garden will begin in the spring. Utilizing documents from the archive and historical sketches, it will regain its original Baroque appearance. Its gates will open to the public in the summer of next year. The work will cost 25 million crowns, with approximately 70 percent covered by EU grants, said Petr Kubín, director of the Mikulov regional museum located in the castle, to ČTK.
The garden currently has overgrown and aged trees. They need to be cut down and replaced with new ones. From the garden below the castle, there will be a view not only of the historic building but also of the Holy Hill and Lower Austria.
Currently, the garden is partly in the style of an English park and partly styled in Baroque. The English park is not suitable for these places; it is not original. The creator of the restoration project, architect Ivar Otruba, chose to restore it in the original Baroque style. The space will therefore be enriched with new flowers, decorative shrubs, and other elements.
The garden was connected to the castle by a staircase that led to its terrace and its sally terreny, that is, a spacious hall on the ground floor. The staircase was demolished during communism and will now be rebuilt.
