Prague - The construction of the Biocentrum has begun at the Albertov campus of Charles University. According to university representatives, the project of a modern educational biomedical center aims to connect various medical and non-medical fields, offering lecture halls, classrooms, and laboratories. The building, including interior equipment, is expected to cost about 6.4 billion crowns, with the construction costs of the Biocentrum amounting to approximately 3.1 billion crowns excluding VAT. Builders started work in April this year, and the construction is set to be completed in June 2026. The university announced this in a press release today.
The educational center is expected to officially start its operations in the winter semester of the academic year 2026/2027, the university reported. The educational center will connect the workplaces of the Faculty of Science, the 1st Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics.
Part of the campus at Albertov will also include the Globcentrum, which is to focus on research in climate change, the dynamics of natural processes, and biodiversity, among other things. According to earlier information, the project of the two scientific educational centers will be the largest construction by the university in the center of Prague in the last 100 years. According to the original plan, construction was to begin at the beginning of 2020, and both centers were supposed to start operating from 2022.
Charles University aims to use European funds from the National Recovery Plan for the Biocentrum. Thanks to subsidies from the plan, a total of three top educational medical centers are set to be established in the Czech Republic. In addition to the Biocentrum at the Albertov in Prague, there is the Charles University project Mephared 2 in Hradec Králové and the Masaryk University project BioPharma Hub in Brno. A total of 9.3 billion crowns from the National Recovery Plan is prepared for construction, the Ministry of Education announced in the past. According to the ministry, money is also being allocated from the state budget and from the own resources of both universities due to the significance of the projects. The completion of the buildings is planned for June 2026, according to the ministry.
"The Biocentrum will contribute to multidisciplinary education within both medical and non-medical fields and in research, related to teaching, as well as to the development and testing of new medicines and treatment methods, and to the determination of preventive measures against diseases whose treatment will be a significant challenge for professionals," said Milena Králíčková, the rector of Charles University.
Modern university lecture halls, study rooms, laboratories equipped with advanced technology, and a relaxation zone with a café are set to be created at the Biocentrum. The main fields that the Biocentrum will focus on are biochemistry and metabolism, cellular systems in health and disease, as well as chemical synthesis, material research, and nanotechnology.
According to the architects of the Biocentrum from the company Znamení čtyř, Juraj Matula and Tomáš Havlíček, the project of the center emphasizes that the Albertov Campus is a place for the meeting of people and ideas. They noted that a fountain with the school logo under the water surface is also to be created on the campus.
