Karlovy University will begin the construction of the Albertov Campus with a stone ceremony

Prague - Charles University will today begin the construction of the Albertov Campus with a groundbreaking ceremony, where two new scientific and educational centers, Biocentrum and Globcentrum, are to be established. University representatives announced in June this year that the construction should be completed by the end of 2025, which is about three years later than originally planned. The largest construction by Charles University in the center of Prague in the last hundred years is expected to cost over 7.8 billion crowns. The university intends to finance it from the state budget, EU grants, its own resources, and loans.

Biocentrum and Globcentrum are intended to serve as educational and research facilities for the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, the Faculty of Science, and the 1st Faculty of Medicine at Charles University. About 1,200 people are expected to work there. Biocentrum will focus on understanding living systems for the needs of human health, new biotechnologies, and biodiversity protection. Research at Globcentrum is to focus on various aspects of global changes.

The new campus in Albertov is to be built according to the design of the studio Znamení čtyř, with which the university signed a contract in 2017 for the creation of project documentation and engineering activities. This spring, the university obtained a zoning decision for the placement of both planned buildings, which are located in an area of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
