Brno – The reconstruction of the park at Moravské náměstí is set to last nine months, with the last modifications made in the 1970s. The work, which includes technologies for rainwater capture, a large water area, the addition of greenery, and the construction of a café with toilets, will cost 131 million crowns. The costs will be shared between Brno and the city district of Brno-střed in a ratio of 70 to 30 percent, representatives of both the city administration and the district said today to reporters.
"The new landmark of the park will be a central multifunctional area with a fountain and water features that will also serve for cultural use, for example, for theater performances, concerts, or exhibitions," said Vojtěch Mencl, the mayor of Brno-střed.
The greenery in the park will also be renewed; the current trees will remain, supplemented by additional trees and shrubs, as well as flowerbeds. The park will also feature play elements for children.
"After the reconstruction, rainwater will be retained in the park, which will then be used for irrigating the trees and flowerbeds," added Markéta Vaňková, the mayor of Brno.
The new design of the square was proposed by the company Consequence Forma architects. Construction work has already begun and will continue until November of this year. At least until summer, the central part of the square will be closed to the public, but the sidewalks around its perimeter will remain accessible.
In the past, the German House stood at Moravské náměstí, but it was demolished at the end of World War II. About two meters below the surface of the square, however, experts have discovered preserved spaces. These are to be statically secured in the future so that occasional tours can be organized.
