Brno – A new café with a covered terrace and public restrooms has opened this afternoon at Brno's Moravské náměstí. At the same time, a new fountain has also begun operation, which has several different modes. Among other things, it can take the form of a large lake, spray water from jets, or create a mist for cooling on hot days. The operation of the fountain and café was jointly launched today by representatives of Brno and the Brno-střed district.
The Parq café with public restrooms will operate daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, offering snacks, light meals, drinks, ice cream, and farmer's hot dogs. "We placed high demands on the operator of the café during the selection process. The café includes public restrooms, which will be free for park visitors. The café operator plans to introduce a refundable cup system so that people can take drinks with them into the park," stated the mayor of the Brno-střed district Vojtěch Mencl (ODS).
The authors of the café's design as well as the overall renovation of the park are architects from the studio Consequence forma architects. The establishment, with 14 seats inside and 70 outside, is located at the end of the circular promenade under ancient trees. The centerpiece of the structure is an eight-meter ellipse called the Sun, which supports the terrace roof and was created in collaboration with artist Richard Loskot.
The entire park at Moravské náměstí underwent extensive renovations last year for 132.5 million crowns. The work included building technology for capturing rainwater, revitalizing green areas, new planting, a new fountain, play elements for children, and the construction of the café. Although the park was opened to the public last November, the café was not yet completed, and the fountain with a thirty-meter diameter only underwent test operations in April. Currently, the newly planted greenery in the park is still protected by temporary fencing, which should disappear during the summer as the plants and grass become established.
The revitalization also included the sanitization and securing of underground spaces of the former German House approximately two meters below the surface. Near the café, a wide staircase hidden under a wooden stage leads to four vaulted spaces. "The future of these spaces is under discussion. Their accessibility during special tours and possibly hosting smaller cultural events is being considered," said the spokesperson for the Brno-střed district Kateřina Dobešová. According to her, the district is negotiating with the Tourist Information Center and the Museum of the City of Brno.
