Brno - Builders on Friday began the demolition of the front wing of the Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University in Brno. The building will give way to more modern spaces for teaching and research, which will be constructed in the same location by 2014 thanks to subsidies from European funds. The result of the faculty's reconstruction will be a new Center for Education, Research, and Innovation in Informatics (CERIT), David Povolný from the university's press office announced today.
"The existing front wing will be replaced by a five-story building A1, which will include lecture halls, classrooms, laboratories, offices, a library, and a modern data center," stated the faculty's dean, Michal Kozubek. The European Union provided 350 million crowns for the construction.
The new front building will be followed by a science and technology park and a business incubator specialized in the field of information and communication technologies. A seven-story building A2 and a covered parking lot will be created for the incubator's needs. The construction will cost 132 million crowns.
Part of the development of the faculty's campus also includes the new CERIT Scientific Cloud computer center for processing scientific data and related research in the field of information technologies. The center will provide computing and storage resources for the needs of scientists from the Czech Republic and abroad. The university has obtained 130 million crowns for equipping the center with computing technology.
