Prof. Petr Pelčák is capable of not only designing but also critically evaluating architecture.
Brno - Seven projects by Petr Pelčák, a professor of architecture at the Brno University of Technology (VUT), are presented in a new exhibition at the rectorate of the Brno technical university. They have been created with various co-authors for Brno over the last three years. Some parts are already built, while others are waiting to be realized. Visitors to the exhibition will learn, for example, what the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University or a new urban district on the site of the former Zbrojovka Brno factory may look like in a few years.
Pelčák is among the architects who have had a significant influence on the transformations of Brno over the last two decades. "Petr Pelčák significantly contributes to the face of the city of Brno," said Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at VUT, Josef Chybík, to reporters today.
Among the projects that builders have already managed to construct, the exhibition features the administrative building Vídeňská, the commercial block Triniti Office Center, and the residential complex Residence Bochořákova. Only one of the projects, the reconstruction of Římské náměstí, has failed in the competition and will likely remain just on paper.
For Masaryk University, Pelčák has recently designed both the reconstruction and modernization of the Faculty of Informatics and a comprehensive reconstruction of the disorganized and dilapidated campus of the Faculty of Arts. "I have always wished to design school buildings," noted Pelčák. Both projects are in the final stages of preparation but have only received part of the necessary funds from the European Union. "Therefore, only parts of them will be realized at this moment," said Pelčák.
The exhibition is supplemented by about 40 works created by students under Pelčák's guidance. "All of these are concrete tasks that architects are currently addressing, and a significant portion of them is dedicated to Brno," stated Pelčák. Visitors will see, for example, how students envision new uses for an unusual building in Brno: the former air raid observation post in the Zbrojovka complex.
In addition to his architectural and teaching work, Pelčák also acts as an author and editor of monographs on Brno architects. "He is capable of not only designing but also critically evaluating architecture," stated Vladimir Šlapeta, head of the Theory Institute at the Faculty of Architecture at VUT.
Some older projects in which Pelčák was involved have received various expert awards or at least nominations for them. These include the construction of Galerie Vaňkovka and the reconstruction of Denisovy sady in Brno, the administrative building of the Morava River Basin Authority in Olomouc, and the administrative building of the Blata company in Blansko.
