The construction of the facilities for the Forest Swimming Pool in Liberec will require up to 3 million

Liberec – The new facilities of the Forest Swimming Pool in Liberec are set to begin construction next year by the eponymous association, which has been renting the site from the city since this year. The construction will be carried out gradually, with an estimated cost of 2.5 to 3 million crowns. Jan Vondrák, the architect and chairman of the Forest Swimming Pool association, stated this today. "We would like to start in April," he added.

So far, a study of the area has been completed, which should provide a direction for the development of the Forest Swimming Pool in the coming years. "The design of the new swimming pool has a simple idea. The effort to keep costs as low as possible led us to the concept of a recycled steel hall, under which the entire construction program can be hidden," Vondrák noted. According to him, the advantage of such a solution is the ability to divide the project into stages, and it will not turn the swimming pool into a construction site for several years.

"Individual construction volumes can be realized gradually. First, the engineering networks and toilets will be prioritized, which are a fundamental improvement for the operation of the swimming pool. Then there will be a public sauna, a sales booth, new changing rooms or showers. The steel structure will be complemented by wooden facade surfaces and a metal roof," said the chairman of the association, which consists of architects from the Mjölk studio, a pub owner, and an economist. The funding for the construction of the swimming pool's facilities, which has a history of more than 70 years, is expected to be raised from grants, sponsors, or donors. The project for the construction of the facilities was successful in Liberec within the so-called participatory budget, where residents of the city decide on the allocation of a part of the funds. This year, it received the most support. A total of 1127 people voted for it, twice as many as for the second most successful project. Thus, 890,000 crowns will go from the budget of Liberec for the improvement of the facilities.

The Forest Swimming Pool at the foot of the Jizera Mountains was reopened in the summer of 2018 after years of discussions. It had been closed and deteriorating since 2001. The city hall allocated 7.5 million for the necessary repairs to make it functional again. However, the previous two seasons were not successful for the swimming pool. There were issues with the water supply, and there was a lack of facilities. Vondrák considers this first summer season under the management of the association to be successful. "We were pleasantly surprised, people came," he said. According to him, there could be as many as 500 people at the pool daily, and there were no issues with water. The association aims to maintain the romantic character of the natural swimming area in the middle of the forest, therefore the goal is not to increase summer attendance. "We want people to visit all year round," Vondrák stated. According to him, the swimming pool is already popular among winter swimmers. "There is quite a large community in Liberec. When we go there, as many as 15 might be swimming," he added.
