Brno - The construction of the Czech Television (ČT) headquarters in Brno with approximately half a billion costs will be one of the main tasks for the new head of the Brno studio, Karel Burian, who was inaugurated today by ČT director Jiří Janeček. The television has needed a new building for years; now a special team is searching for suitable locations. The plot should be about 15,000 square meters, but a specific location has not yet been chosen, said studio spokesperson Hana Orošová to ČTK.
Currently, the television is located in two buildings in the city center. "The original purpose and construction solutions do not meet television needs and, due to their age, will require significant repair costs in the coming years. Additionally, the buildings are listed as protected monuments. Their location in the center greatly complicates transport accessibility," Orošová stated. If the television workplaces were in one location, operations would be more economical, she added.
Both current buildings date back to the First Republic and have not been fully renovated. The Typos building on Jezuitská Street was originally a residential building, and the basement space, now the studio, used to be a ballroom. The building on Běhounská previously served as a bank. The television also has warehouses and garages in Židenice. ČT would like to sell all these buildings and use the proceeds to cover part of the construction costs for the new headquarters.
Fifty-three-year-old Burian succeeded in the selection process. The Czech Television Council appointed him on December 19. He is taking over the position vacated by Vladimír Karmazín, the current operational director of Czech Television. In the last three months, Lujza Oravcová, who is now managing the television's finances, has been in charge of the leadership in Brno.
Burian studied production at FAMU and worked in television from 1973 to 2001. He was involved in the founding of Radio Petrov and led the news department of the Regional Television Agency. Critics accused him of bias in some reports prepared during his time as head of news for Czech Television.
"My work will be closely monitored. I'm glad about that because I don't want any doubts to arise about the steps I intend to take," Burian stated. In the coming days, he plans to familiarize himself with the situation in the studio. Only after that will he announce what specific measures he has planned.
