Architectural Walk through the Gems of the 80s with Vendula Hnídková
Meeting point in front of the Žižkov Television Tower on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 5:00 PM
It towers over the city. Everyone knows it. It cannot be overlooked. It emerges from everywhere, entering unexpected vistas, and has become a part of us. The Žižkov Television Tower - meet it! The 1980s in Czech architecture are not exactly one of the most remarkable epochs. The cause of the banal level of most construction output cannot be sought so much in the architects themselves as in the generally oppressive circumstances of the normalization period. However, there are exceptions, which often arose against the backdrop of the insensitive urbanism of the time, and thus they still open lively controversies today. One such example is certainly the Žižkov Television Tower (1985-1992) by architect Václav Aulický and structural engineer Jiří Kozák. This unmistakable dominant feature of Prague is, however, only one of the interventions that has influenced the appearance of present-day Žižkov, whose original character from the 19th century was to be replaced by "modern" panel housing developments.
