Island - The empty space next to Peace Square in Island could potentially be used as a market place again in the future. The city has had studies prepared for the use of the space after the old market hall was demolished. Both proposals account for the market use returning to the square. However, in what form is not yet clear. The citizens of Island could also decide on this in a referendum, said Island's deputy mayor Libor Bílek (independent) to ČTK today.

"There is a study for the market to be created across the entire area. Then there is a study that only partially proposes the market and also includes some forest park modifications. At this moment, neither the council nor the city assembly have discussed the permanent concept for the area. We will have to decide which option to choose," said Bílek.

According to the deputy mayor, the city should decide as soon as possible at least on a temporary option and improve the unsightly area after demolition somewhat this year. Temporary stands for traders could find their place there. Their return is particularly being called for by the owners of surrounding shops, who have lost customers since the demolition of the market hall. "It’s a space right in the center of the city. Perhaps a referendum could be held, so that citizens can express what they actually want there," Bílek added.

The now empty space once had a road running through it; the municipal market was established there in the 1990s. In recent years, it has been the subject of discussions in Island. While some called for the demolition of the market hall, others wanted its preservation. Last year, the city ultimately terminated the contract with the long-term tenant and had the dilapidated buildings leveled.
