The UJEP Scientific Library from SIAL is the library achievement of the year

Prague - The best library of the year 2013 has been awarded to the library in the Central Bohemian town of Milín. The City Library in Litvínov won the award in the category of significant informational achievement for the modernization of its spaces and creative approach to developing a community library. Both institutions, whose representatives received the awards today at the Clementinum in Prague, will receive a reward of 70,000 crowns from the Ministry of Culture.
The Library of Dr. Emanuel Bořický in Milín won in the category of basic library. Since 2011, it has operated in barrier-free spaces created by converting the original granary, allowing a maternal center, low-threshold club, exhibition, and lecture hall to gather under one roof.
"Traditional library events and services are complemented by unprecedented activities engaging all segments of the community. The extraordinary enthusiasm of three librarians for working with all generations of visitors results in the library being the driving force of all activities in the community," the organizers explain the choice of this year's winner. The library in a town with 2,141 inhabitants recorded 11,422 visitors last year.
"This is a beautiful recognition of the community and the work of the employees, and it is clear that they are doing their job well," said Pavel Nekl, the mayor of Milín, to ČTK. He recalled that there were initial doubts about whether people would even come to the library located outside the center of the village.
The Local Library of Žabeň in the Moravian-Silesian Region and the Local Library in Měrunice in the Ústí Region received special recognition in the same category. In the category of library achievements, the Scientific Library of UJEP in Ústí nad Labem received a special award "for merging faculty libraries into an effective whole in a modernly designed library building." The library was opened at the beginning of the year. The builder was the firm SIAL architects and engineers, and the library is part of the new Multifunctional Information and Education Center of UJEP.
For the fourth time, the Library of the Year award includes a prize for the best city library. This year, it has been awarded to the Library of the City of Hradec Králové. The aim of the competition is to recognize the best libraries operated or established by cities and to motivate them to expand and improve public library and information services. Criteria include, for example, the number of acquisitions, the area of the library open to the public, the number of registered users, and the number of internet-connected stations. The winner also receives 70,000 crowns.
The Hradec library has been functioning since 1894. In March, a new central library building named the Center for Lifelong Learning was opened, created from the renovation of the former Vertex factory according to a project by architect David Vávra. The jury was particularly impressed by its specialized music department, which holds the largest collection of CDs and scores in the republic, a new children's department with a rich program, and an audio library for the visually impaired.
A special award was given to the City Library in Nové Město nad Metují, which loaned an average of nine items to every resident of its town. As a reward, it received a bibliobox, a container placed outside the library buildings that allows for the return of books independent of operational hours.
