Val. Meziříčí - Valašské Meziříčí is considering the construction of a sports hall, which should be a joint project with the Zlín Region. The hall could be located on Palackého Street in the area of the secondary integrated school established by the region. The construction of the hall has been a long-term issue in the city, which has more than 22,000 inhabitants. Last year, the city planned to build it independently, in the area of the former barracks. Today, the city council approved the plan for joint construction, which had previously been agreed upon by the regional council.
According to Mayor Robert Stržínka (ANO), the investment in the construction and operation of the hall would be shared between the city and the region, and funding from grants is also being considered, with the private sector potentially involved. The hall is estimated to cost between 80 to 90 million crowns.
In the morning and early afternoon, the hall would primarily be used by the school, while in the afternoon and on weekends it would serve sports clubs. School director Petr Pavlůsek stated today at the council meeting that he has long sought better facilities for students. There are also plans for the renovation of the school gymnasium, which would be preserved, and the new hall would be adjacent to it.
"The new sports hall would not only solve the long-term unsatisfactory condition of the school gym, but it would also serve as a modern and adequately large facility with appropriate amenities for the citizens and sports clubs of the city, which is currently lacking in Valašské Meziříčí," said regional councilor Petr Gazdík (STAN) earlier.
Two possible locations for the hall were presented to the city councilors today. In both cases, according to the mayor, there is enough space for it in the area. However, in one option, the building would encroach on the oval sports area, which would have to be shortened. The plans include amenities for athletes, a grandstand capacity of up to 400 people, and parking.
According to Stržínka, it will still be addressed how the investment will be shared between the city and the region. A working group will handle the project preparation, and, according to Stržínka, the design and permitting process will take about a year, with construction potentially starting in 2019.
