Sokolov - In Sokolov, demolition of the remaining houses from the former barracks near the Vítězná housing estate will begin in August. The city has already selected a contractor for the work, who will remove the unsightly buildings by the end of September. More than 900,000 crowns will be allocated from the city budget for the demolition, said Sokolov's mayor Jan Picka (ČSSD) to journalists today.

"The buildings on Vítězná have long been no beauty for our city. They have become targets for vandalism and, among other things, have attracted people who do not inspire confidence. So we agreed to clear this area, demolish the buildings, and gradually prepare it so that the city can offer new plots for family houses," said Picka.

The notice periods for tenants who have been running small bazaars or pawn shops in the houses will still be in effect until August. After the clearing, the city will likely offer the land to an investor for the construction of houses. "Ultimately, there is also a possibility that the city will build some houses itself and then offer them," the mayor added. The area of the remaining part of the barracks is one of the few locations where the construction of family houses can develop in the city. Additional space for the creation of plots is in the settlements of Hrušková and Novina. However, bringing in engineering networks means overcoming a considerable distance and elevation.

In recent years, a new neighborhood of family houses and business incubators for smaller manufacturing companies has emerged in the area of the larger part of the former barracks around Husitská and Vítězné streets. Overall, the city has invested over 130 million crowns into the location with the help of subsidies, but the sale of the land has balanced the invested costs.
