Brussels - In Prague, jobs are found more easily than anywhere else in the European Union. This is indicated by a survey released today by Eurostat. Prague has thus outperformed all European metropolises. The only cities that can compare are the Danish capital Copenhagen and the Irish capital Dublin, where the prospects of finding a good job are somewhat lower, but not significantly.
Out of the residents of Prague surveyed by the European statistical office, a total of three-quarters agreed with the statement that "good employment" can easily be found in the metropolis. In Copenhagen, 74 percent of respondents agreed, and in Dublin, 70 percent. At the opposite end of the ranking are the German Frankfurt and the Italian cities of Palermo and Naples, where only three percent of respondents gave a positive answer to the same question.
However, the Slovak metropolis Bratislava is also doing relatively well. Within the European Union, it ranked seventh overall, surpassing several renowned cities such as Amsterdam, Brussels, and others.
Respondents' answers undoubtedly correlate with the unemployment rates in the respective cities. Prague also ranks among the European "champions" in this regard. According to the latest statistics, unemployment in the Czech capital is around 2.5 percent, which is not only significantly below the average unemployment rate in the Czech Republic but also in the European Union.
Prague is the only "region" in the Czech Republic that exceeds the average standard of living in the EU. It is also the wealthiest region among the new EU member states. Its wealth per capita is nearly 140 percent of the EU average.
These seemingly very pleasing statistics, however, bring problems related primarily to higher prices. This is also reflected in another Eurostat statistic that evaluates housing availability. Here, the Czech capital is definitely not among the EU top performers. Only 16 percent of the surveyed Prague residents agreed with the statement that good housing can be found in the city at a reasonable price.
Conversely, housing is most easily found in Leipzig, Germany, Aalborg, Denmark, or Braga, Portugal, at least according to more than two-thirds of respondents. At the bottom of the imagined ranking is Paris, where only three percent of respondents said it is easy to find good and affordable housing. The best-positioned Czech city is Ostrava, where housing is easily found according to about half of those surveyed.
