Ostrava – In Ostrava, the repair of the gap near the central Masaryk Square has begun. The sewer system will be repaired, as well as the paved areas. There are also plans for landscaping and the restoration of walking paths that lead across the current grassy area. The reconstruction, which should be completely finished next year, will cost 11.6 million crowns. This was reported to journalists by the spokesperson of the municipality, Gabriela Pokorná.
The gap is located between Masaryk Square and the streets of October 28, Dlouhá, and Zámecká. It is expected to be developed over the next five to ten years. "Given the construction of a parking facility at the corner of Purkyňova and Zámecká streets, for which the city announced an architectural competition last year and is now preparing project documentation, and considering the unsatisfactory technical condition of the area, the city has prepared its reconstruction," the spokesperson said. The modification aims to improve the appearance of the gap until it is finally built up.
"About two years ago, we discussed with the public the possibility of using Masaryk Square as a so-called relaxation zone with temporary buildings for refreshments and space for sports or cultural activities. Given the controversy surrounding the project in this area, its economics, and the impacts of the COVID pandemic, we decided not to implement the proposal in full, but to ensure necessary adjustments to the technical infrastructure and surfaces so that the area is functional, as well as prepared for cultural activities," said Deputy Mayor Zuzana Bajgarová (ANO).
During the reconstruction of the area, the current walking paths will be preserved. The pathways will, however, be straightened into a regular cross. The asphalt surface will be replaced with large concrete slabs bordered by small cobblestones, which will allow for better rainwater absorption. The newly laid turf will be able to be mowed to a very low height, thus enabling the grassy areas to be used for relaxation.
