Jablonec nad Nisou

Jablonec nad Nisou - The construction of a new building for the Museum of Glass and Costume Jewelry in Jablonec nad Nisou began with the felling of trees in the park. The extension in the shape of a faceted glass crystal will cost 53 million crowns including VAT. The supplier is the company Energie - building and mining Kladno, which was the only bidder for this contract, museum director Milada Valečková informed ČTK today. According to her, the unusual building could welcome its first visitors as early as the end of next year.

The design of the extension is the work of the Prague company Hlaváček-architects, which four years ago enchanted the selection committee with its proposal. The shape of the faceted costume jewelry stone, or "chaton," was chosen by the architects not only as a symbol of the region's flourishing but also of what visitors can expect inside the building. However, the museum had to repeat the competition for the unusual building's supplier. "In the first round, no one applied at all, so in the second round, in agreement with the Ministry of Culture, which is financing the entire construction, we increased the estimated value by 20 percent," Valečková noted.

In the repeated competition, there was only one bidder, and it was feared that the competition would need to be repeated. However, according to the director, the contract for the project has been signed, and at the end of last week, the company took over the construction. If the construction work proceeds as planned, the building should be under the glass shell by winter, and it should be completed by the end of May next year, according to Valečková. "Then we would have enough time to realize the exhibition of Christmas decorations, which we have conceptually and artistically prepared," she added.

The Jablonec collection of Christmas decorations is probably the largest public collection of its kind in the world, containing over 15,000 items. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the three-story glass extension will also house the museum's technical facilities with storage areas, garages, and air conditioning systems. One floor is intended to seamlessly connect to the original vestibule of the museum's Art Nouveau building and is designed as a multifunctional space for temporary exhibitions, lectures, or concerts. During the summer season, it could also serve as a café. According to Valečková, the extension is intended to be a Christmas gift on the occasion of the 115th anniversary of the museum's founding.

The work began with the felling of trees in the park, which will be revitalized during the construction. "The trees were already at the end of their lifespan; the felling of most of them was recommended by an expert based on a dendrological survey. For some others, we still need to conduct a pull test," added the museum's technical deputy, Jan Pleštil. According to him, it is also necessary to restore the surfaces of the pathways.

The revitalized park should be a dignified link to the city center and a relaxation zone, which will eventually be filled with glass sculptures. A glass bridge is planned to connect the park and the museum with a planned transport terminal and train station in the future.
