DOMAŽLICE - A new church is expected to be built in Domažlice within two years. Members of the local congregation of the Czech Brethren Evangelical Church plan to construct it in the city’s Hanov Park. The construction is estimated to cost about nine million crowns, said Milena Wolfová, the curator of the congregation, to ČTK. According to her, the Domažlice Evangelical Church has been striving for a new congregation house since its establishment after World War I. "The construction was initially hindered by the occupation and then by the currency reform in the 1950s, which devalued the saved funds," explained Wolfová. The new congregation house with a prayer room and meeting spaces will be on land that the congregation already owns and which is designated for church construction in the urban plan. The building will be barrier-free and will also provide accommodation for guests. The congregation has received a grant from a church collection for the construction and will obtain part of the funds from the sale of the current congregation house. Congregation members also welcome additional financial donations. Even though they will be involved in the construction through self-help, they still lack around 2.7 million crowns. However, the Domažlice Evangelicals hope that the new house will bring congregational life closer to other residents of the city and the surrounding area. The congregation currently uses a building that originally served as a tavern. However, it is insufficient in size and does not provide a dignified environment for worship services. About 40 people attend every Sunday. "There is a lack of adequate facilities for children and youth gatherings, holding Bible classes, or organizing larger spiritual and cultural events, such as regular meetings with the partner congregation from nearby Bavaria's Furth im Wald," explained Wolfová.
