Cheb - A modern transportation terminal began construction today in Cheb. For 117 million crowns, a hexagonal building with platforms around the perimeter will be created in the area in front of the train station, according to the project. The investor of the construction is the Karlovy Vary Region, which obtained a grant for the transportation terminal from the Regional Operational Program.
"The Karlovy Vary Region is contributing approximately 108 million crowns to the pre-financing, and the city of Cheb will also contribute nearly nine million crowns," said the deputy of the governor, Petr Navrátil (ČSSD).
According to governor Josef Novotný (ČSSD), the construction will be a clear benefit for passengers. The area in front of the station will be connected by a dry path with a roof directly linked to the arcade, where the main flow of people disembarking from buses and trains usually occurs.
In the central building, people will find an information center, bike storage, refreshments, and there will also be operational facilities for drivers and dispatchers. "An architecturally bold and very interesting solution for the terminal will emerge. This brings a breath of young architecture to Cheb," commented Navrátil on the construction.
According to Cheb mayor Pavel Vanoušek (ČSSD), while the construction will bring certain inconveniences to the residents around the station and passengers next year, it should improve the quality of living in this part of the city after completion. "It is an ideal connection of railway, bus, and public transportation. The city of Cheb is overloaded with traffic, and we are trying to encourage people to use public transport more, and the new terminal should contribute to that," Vanoušek told ČTK.
The entrance to the terminal is designed through the intersection from Dukelská Street. The landscaping of the existing mature greenery, supplemented with new planting, will serve as a noise and dust barrier against the surrounding buildings. "Simultaneously with the construction of the terminal, the reconstruction of Žižkova Street is also planned, including the intersection with Dukelská Street," added Vanoušek.
The transportation terminal is expected to be completed by the end of 2012. Following the trio of terminals in Sokolov, Mariánské Lázně, and Cheb, a similar project in Karlovy Vary should be next in line.
