Benešov - In the former Táborské barracks in Benešov, small apartments for seniors could be created. A private company wants to build them on the site of the main barrack building. The structure, which measures almost 150 meters in length and has high four-meter ceilings, is, according to Mayor Petr Hostek (ČSSD), in poor condition, and its renovation would be more expensive than constructing a new building.
"At this moment, one of the possibilities for utilizing that space is to negotiate with a company that builds senior cooperative apartments," Hostek told ČTK. According to him, the apartments would cover various categories, from standard housing to a care home regime. "There could also be starter apartments for young people, so there would be a popular intergenerational mixing," the mayor stated. On the two to three hectares of land, he said, up to 700 people could live.
Whether the city would demolish the barrack building or if the demolition costs would be borne by the private company will depend on further negotiations. Neither option would, according to Hostek, be disadvantageous for the city.
Benešov has pushed out dozens of homeless people from its more than twenty-five-hectare area, who had to move elsewhere, and it is starting to demolish some smaller buildings. The city aims to rehabilitate the area and offer it to investors. "It would be foolish to sell that brownfield all at once; it could never pay off. The city needs to have a vision of what should be in that space and fulfill it with specific projects," Hostek noted. In transforming the area, the city must adhere to the valid zoning plan. In addition to the construction of apartments, the establishment of an entertainment center is also planned.
