Brno - The title of Construction of the South Moravian Region 2006 is being contested mainly by Brno projects. Out of 31 registered, there are 19 from Brno. Construction in Brno is significantly more active than in other parts of the region, and smaller towns often do not dare to undertake bolder projects, said Vítězslav Nový from the Faculty of Architecture at VUT today to ČTK. In the competition, among other things, there is a new check-in hall at Brno Airport, the renovated Freedom Square in Brno, and a golf course in Jinačovice. Among industrial, technological, and residential buildings, there are only Brno projects, which also significantly dominate in other categories. This dominance is confirmed by statisticians. Last year, nearly 39 billion was spent on construction in the region, of which 29.5 billion was in Brno directly. The jury will announce the winners in six categories in mid-April at the construction fairs in Brno; they already met today to evaluate the registered buildings. According to Nový, the headquarters of the Brno company VARS or the terminal in Tuřany could succeed. "This is a building that has brought a new wind," he stated. Conversely, the chances for Freedom Square are considered debatable. A part of the public and experts have condemned its new appearance. The biggest competition for the title will be among the reconstructions. There are 11 registered, including the building of the Supreme Administrative Court, the Vienna Point administrative center, the campus of the Faculty of Information Technology at VUT, and the swimming pool in Blansko. Two years ago, experts chose the Reduta Theatre as the best renovated building. In the previous edition, the first part of the Masaryk University campus, the Vaňkovka shopping gallery, the sports hall in Hodonín, and the new acute medicine pavilion at the Brno Hospital of the Merciful Brothers also succeeded.
