Prague - The construction of one part of the new judicial palace in Brno is at risk. The chief designer and the Brno regional court claim, according to TV Nova, that the Ministry of Justice lacks funds and allegedly refuses to communicate. The Ministry disagrees and states that it is actively addressing the problem, which it attributes to the previous administration.
According to Nova, the Ministry is not able to pay for the work done. The construction company is taking out loans, which, according to the television, are increasing the cost of the project by millions of crowns. Ministry spokesperson Zuzana Kuncová admitted that the situation is indeed critical. "The entire project was commissioned by the previous administration of the Ministry of Justice, even though full financial coverage was not secured," the spokesperson told the television.
In order to prevent further debt accumulation, the Ministry, according to Nova, does not want to issue permits for the construction of the above-ground part of the state prosecutor's office building. The chief designer of the project is protesting against this. The above-ground part of the prosecutor's office is connected to the courts, and if construction on just one side of the court begins in July, there is a risk, according to Nova, that the foundations of the building could be compromised. Due to the proximity of the Svratka River, underground waters could push up the underground part of the building if it is not supported by the above-ground part.
"What the designer is saying is his matter; we are not afraid of the destruction of the building," Kuncová stated. The television further reported that the Ministry will now call a meeting to address the construction of the Brno judicial palace. "The Ministry of Justice is also prepared for the option of considering withdrawing from the contract," the spokesperson added.
According to the original plan, upon completion in 2008, staff from the City Court in Brno, the District Court Brno-Countryside, and the City Prosecutor's Office in Brno were to settle in the new judicial complex.
The complex was to consist of two buildings with two underground and six above-ground floors. The buildings were planned to include 60 courtrooms with separate entrances for judges, defendants, witnesses, and the public.
