Brno – The newly established association Za Brno nezbourané aims to prevent unnecessary demolitions of valuable buildings that have disappeared from the list of cultural monuments due to an administrative error. Its members include art historians, architects, heritage conservationists, and archaeologists who informed about the establishment of the association in a press release.

The motivation for the formation of the association is a recent decision by the Supreme Administrative Court confirming that monuments listed on the register late, after 1987, are not considered monuments. In the South Moravian Region alone, this affects 1,400 objects.

"The absence of heritage zones and the loss of heritage protection for 1,400 monuments in the South Moravian Region will mean an irreplaceable loss not only for Brno if the situation is not urgently addressed," warns one of the founders of the association, Robert Janás, head of the Department of Art History at the Museum of the City of Brno.

Among the founding members of the association are, for example, the writer and art historian Kateřina Tučková, architectural historian Pavel Zatloukal, Jindřich Chatrný, architect Robert Václavík, architectural historian Dagmar Černoušková, heritage conservationist Petr Svoboda, archaeologist Marek Peška, ethnologist Jana Pospíšilová, expert on Brno’s underground Aleš Svoboda, and others.

"The topic of heritage zones and the re-listing of 800 objects that lost their protection among monuments is important. We do not want to hinder the natural development of the city in any way, but we are extremely concerned about both the appearance of contemporary Brno and the legacy of past generations. We want to protect these values," added one of the initiators of the association.

The National Heritage Institute also called for a quick declaration of heritage zones, which the city leadership has been preparing for more than two years.
