Karlovy Vary - The Association Concert Hall for Karlovy Vary proposes the construction of a hall inside the Imperial Baths building. According to the association, the city urgently needs the hall, and building it within the national cultural monument would be the cheapest option. However, it faces objections from heritage protectors. A joint meeting about this option is to take place in October, said the association's chairman Martin Ondráček at today's city council meeting. "The first reason is that a national cultural monument deserves public use. By placing an orchestra here that attracts several thousand people monthly, we ensure visitor attendance. And the most important reason is that it is the cheapest option. A new hall would cost about one billion, and purchasing and renovating another building would cost a similar amount. The construction inside the Imperial Baths is estimated at about 200 million more than the existing project," Ondráček stated.
The association's efforts, which have been signed by over 3,000 people in a petition, were also supported today by Mayor Petr Kulhánek (KOA). Although funding is limiting, he said, it is not fatal. He referred to the attitude of the heritage protectors as fatal. The study for the hall in the Imperial Baths suggests using part of the former bathhouses. However, according to heritage protectors, these are one of the most valuable parts of the building in their entirety. The association argues that only a few bathrooms would be occupied, which are currently completely devastated and lack original equipment.
The reconstruction of the Imperial Baths is estimated to cost about 500 million Czech crowns according to the current project, and is being prepared by the Karlovy Vary Region. It will be financed from state, regional, and city funds. If a compromise could be found and the option of constructing the concert hall is approved by heritage protectors, the existing project would need to be revised again.
