Silesian Ostrava will modify the area near the Hermanice church according to Kamil Mrva's design

Ostrava – The city district of Slezská Ostrava is preparing to modify the public space in front of the St. Mark's Church in Heřmanice. The area should be adjusted to serve not only for parking but also for relaxation and events. The spokesperson for the city hall, Jana Pondělíčková, informed journalists today.

"The goal is to utilize the potential of this place and transform it into a 'new square', which will serve the locals not only as a parking lot and a passage to the church, but as a full-fledged space for meeting, relaxation, and cultural or community events," stated Pondělíčková.

At the beginning of this year, the district conducted a survey to find out what changes people living in the area would like to see. Their suggestions were then passed on to architect Kamil Mrva, who developed the proposal for the transformation of the space.

"In April, a public discussion with citizens was supposed to take place, during which the upcoming project was to be presented. However, due to the announced measures, this is not possible, so we have prepared a video presentation in collaboration with architects, in which the proposals are introduced and people can express their opinions starting today," said mayor Richard Vereš (ANO). The video has been published on the district's Facebook page.

According to the mayor, the area in front of the church is inadequate. "There is a lack of quality furniture, and overall the space does not give a welcoming impression, which is a pity considering the beautiful church, the newly opened parish garden, and the strategic location in the middle of Heřmanice," added Vereš.

Architects in their proposal, which can be modified based on citizens' feedback, also consider a row of trees visually extending the church nave. The city district would place benches, trash cans, public lighting, and bike racks in the area. Parking would be on grass paving slabs surrounded by a perennial flower bed. The proposal also includes the repair of a well and a flower meadow behind the church. The revitalization is planned to take place in 2022 to 2023 and would be connected to the construction of the sewer system that the city is preparing in the area.
