Přerov - The city council of Přerov has postponed the decision on the design of the new Tyrš Bridge, which is to connect the banks of the Bečva River near the city center, by at least another three months. The councilors were supposed to discuss construction options in April, but the city will present the material no earlier than June. Bohuslav Přidal, spokesperson for the Přerov city hall, told ČTK that. Ornithologists are protesting against the bridge option with a cable structure promoted by the city council. They point out that the city has already started preparatory work without waiting for the decision of the city council. However, the city hall leadership denies this. Vice-chairman of the Moravian Ornithological Society Jiří Šafránek told ČTK that while city officials claim they will leave the decision to the council, they have nevertheless initiated administrative proceedings for the placement of the bridge in the cable option. "The councilors will thus find out that everything is prepared. They will be presented with a fait accompli and will have no choice but to approve what has been submitted to them," the ornithologist believes. The city hall spokesperson admitted that the city has started preparatory work. However, he justified it by saying that the city needs to have information, for example, about the construction cost. The city reportedly does not intend to circumvent the councilors. "The truth is that we are working on it to have an idea of how much it would cost. However, it is in no way decided; these are just preparatory works," the spokesperson told ČTK. According to him, the city leadership will not present the material about the bridge construction to the councilors at this time, as it is not yet detailed. "The next council meeting will be in June. It is true that we are pressed for time. For example, New Year's Eve celebrations must take place on the other side because access to the current footbridge is not permitted for a larger number of people. The condition of the current bridge is not ideal, but on the other hand, it is a long-term process. We want to have project and financial matters in hand," the spokesperson added. The bridge, valued at around 50 million crowns, has sparked a dispute between the city hall leadership and local ornithologists for several months. The council prefers the option that won the architectural-urban competition at the turn of 2003 and 2004. According to ornithologists, however, the structure with vertical cables would inevitably injure or kill dozens to hundreds of wild birds each year. The city leadership does not share these concerns.
