Reconstruction of the train station hall in Sokolov is set to begin next year

Sokolov - Passengers in Sokolov will reportedly see the reconstruction of the station lobby after many years. The interior of the building remained neglected despite earlier promises of modernizing the platforms and constructing an adjacent modern bus terminal. However, the management of the Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC) has now directly promised the city that they will begin processing the project for the reconstruction this year. SŽDC plans to invest 20 million crowns into the building, Mayor of Sokolov Jan Picka (ČSSD) said today to ČTK.

"This promise pertains to the financial investment into the station building. It is meant to create a shared facility for passengers, both from the reconstructed bus terminal that is in close proximity, and for passengers of the Czech Railways. To my great satisfaction, the General Director of SŽDC expressed understanding of this situation. He promised me that Sokolov station is his number one priority," said Picka. According to him, the actual construction work could ideally begin next year.

The reconstruction of the station lobby has been promised by Czech Railways since 2009, when the construction of the modern bus terminal began. However, only a new platform and a underpass from the station to the platform towards the Šenvert district were successfully built. The station lobby continued to deteriorate. The building then passed into the ownership of SŽDC, and the city of Sokolov subsequently discovered that no one had yet started working on fulfilling the promises. Thus, passengers have a real promise of reconstruction after seven years.
