Velké Meziříčí - Preparations for the renovation of the historic square in Velké Meziříčí have stopped because the city councilors rejected proceeding according to the winning proposal from last year's architectural competition. A total of 16 studios applied to the competition, and the team led by Brno architect David Mikulášek won. Mayor Radovan Necid (ODS) told ČTK today that in his opinion, the local residents should decide on the matter.
The proposal to prepare a local referendum was not approved by the city councilors on Tuesday by one vote, but the mayor plans to submit it again at the next meeting. "We'll see how it turns out," he said. According to the mayor, it would be possible to combine the voting with the upcoming parliamentary elections in the fall. The city had been preparing the competition for a long time, accompanied by events for councilors and the public, as well as a survey where people could indicate what they would like to see in the square, he recalled.
The results of the competition were announced last summer, and in November all proposals were displayed at the Jupiter club. Discussions with criticisms of the winning proposal only heated up in the spring when the city was preparing to sign a contract with the competition winner for the creation of the project documentation. Part of the councilors urged the mayor not to sign the contract.
After a lengthy debate with architect Mikulášek on Tuesday, the councilors rejected the reconstruction of the square based on his proposal. They mainly criticized the transportation solution. "These problems are so serious that part of the council could not support the proposal to release 4.3 million crowns for the preparation of project documentation," subsequently stated on the city website councilor Stanislav Rosa from the Christian Democratic Party. He suggests negotiating with the authors of the other two most successful competition proposals.
The costs for the new adjustment of the central part of Velké Meziříčí, namely the square and the five adjacent streets, according to earlier statements from the municipal office, were not to exceed 50 million crowns. This was to be accompanied by the replacement of old infrastructure, particularly water and sewage systems.
