Žatec - President Miloš Zeman today apologized in Žatec for derogatory words about the local square. During his three-day visit to the Ústí nad Labem region, which he started on Tuesday, he said that it is known that the Žatec square is destroyed and needs to be repaired.

"When I arrived here and drove around this square, I couldn't believe my own eyes," he said at an afternoon meeting with the public in the historic center of Žatec. He cited a regional newspaper as the source of information he had drawn from before visiting the hop-growing town. "I myself warn against journalists and tell you not to trust the newspapers, and now I fell for it," said Zeman. "I apologize to the citizens of Žatec," he said. "And otherwise, I congratulate you on that beautiful square," he added.

In Žatec, which is seeking to have its hop-growing heritage listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, about two hundred people gathered in front of the town hall. Earlier, Zeman visited Dubí in the Teplice area, where he also met with citizens, and Chomutov, where high school students posed questions to the president. On Thursday, the people in Šluknov will see Zeman, and the president will conclude his fifth visit to the Ústí nad Labem region during his term in Rumburk.
