Přerov - A new information center will be created in the Přerov district of Předmostí over the next six months. It will become another important site along the established trail from Předmostí back to prehistory. Visitors will gain insights into the world-renowned location with the findings of mammoth bones. Construction of the info center will begin on Monday and will cost more than eight million crowns. Jiří Raba, head of the investment department of the Přerov city hall's development department, told ČTK.

For the construction of the info center, which specializes in one of the most famous European archaeological sites of the Upper Paleolithic, the city received seven million crowns from the Regional Operational Program of Central Moravia, Raba stated. Thanks to state funding, preparations for the project could begin so that the first visitors could pick up printed materials, brochures, and souvenirs in the new premises this year. "The increasing interest in tourism in Předmostí requires the construction of necessary sanitary facilities, thus the project also includes essential social facilities. The layout of the building is simple, intentionally designed as a single large room with an area of 50 square meters," Raba added.
The info center will partially extend into the slope of the cemetery wall, where the most significant discoveries in Předmostí were uncovered in the past. Therefore, archaeologists examined the terrain before handing over the construction site. "We only documented untouched geological layers, and we found no specific Paleolithic artifacts. However, we intend to keep a watchful eye on the site going forward, as we must monitor construction work that will affect the terrain. Discoveries are certainly not excluded, as the famous site of mammoth bone and Upper Paleolithic tool discoveries lies just a few dozen meters away," informed Aleš Drechsler, an archaeologist from the Comenius Museum in Přerov.
The new information center will complement the existing Předmostí history trail, which measures over eight kilometers and includes nine educational stops. The main object of the trail is the Memorial of Mammoth Hunters, opened in 2006. A travertine sculpture called "Probe into Prehistory" marks the start of the trail, while Čekyňský Hill is the highest point of the journey. Other stops include Skalka, Hradisko, School Trail, Přerov Gorge, Mamutík, and the school museum. The tradition of tracking the paths of mammoth hunters was initiated by the J. A. Komenský Elementary School in Předmostí, and the first year of the trek took place in 1988. A year later, the Small School Museum was opened. It is the last of the nine stops along the trail.
