Antonín Engel

Prague - 130 years ago, on May 4, 1879, the prominent Czech architect and urban planner, architecture theorist, and professor at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Antonín Engel, was born. He came from Poděbrady, studied at the Czech and German Technical Universities in Prague and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was a student of Otto Wagner.

His strict classicizing monumental architecture was a reflection of the official architecture of the newly formed Czechoslovak state. Among his most interesting works is certainly the monumentally conceived city waterworks and filtration station in Prague - Podolí. He is also known for his project for Vítězné náměstí in Prague - Dejvice, with the realization of residential buildings and the general staff building. Among his other successful buildings are also the buildings of the University of Chemical Technology, the University of Agriculture and Forestry Engineering, and the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University, the Masaryk College, or the Ministry of Railways (today's Ministry of Transport). He is also the author of the renovation of the Rudolfina from a parliament building back to a concert hall.
