Prague - The capital city will start construction of a P+R parking garage at Černý Most in July with a capacity of 880 spaces. Preparatory work has begun, and it is expected to be completed next year, with the first vehicles set to park in the garage in early 2022. This was reported to the press today by Prague spokesperson Vít Hofman. The garage will be built for the city by BAK construction company and Metrostav at a cost of 498.8 million crowns excluding VAT. The city plans to build additional similar parking facilities. Prague has long struggled with a shortage of spaces in its park-and-ride lots.

The purpose of P+R parking lots is to relieve traffic in the city center by allowing commuters to leave their cars on the outskirts and continue into the city using public transport. Currently, there are about 20 such facilities in the metropolis, located near metro, bus, tram, or train stations. The lack of these parking facilities is a frequently mentioned problem in Prague transportation. Politicians often discuss them, but only a minimal number have been created in recent years, with the latest P+R parking lot, Běchovice-střed, opened at the end of last year.

The three-story building at Černý Most will be built on the area near Chlumecká street above the existing underground P+R parking lot for 300 cars, which will remain intact. Drivers will be able to walk to the nearby B metro station from the parking lot.

According to Deputy Mayor for Transport Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě), the city is preparing additional parking facilities. "In 2020, we will open P+R Lipence, Hostivař 3, and Lednická Kyje, which will add at least another 200 parking spaces,” he stated. The city administration has also recently obtained a building permit for the construction of another parking garage on Petržílková street in Prague 13. Its capacity will be 360 spaces, part of which will serve local residents and part as a P+R parking lot. The costs are estimated at 278 million crowns excluding VAT, with completion expected by mid-2022.

Moreover, the city administration plans to build additional parking garages, with construction expected to start only in 2022. This will include a garage near the Depo Hostivař metro station for 649 cars, a P+R at Opatov with a capacity of 498 spaces, an underground and above-ground facility in Zličín with capacities of 450 and 688 parking spaces, and a building on Tobrucká street in Prague 6 for 380 vehicles. The last parking garage is part of the transport terminal project near Smíchovské nádraží and is expected to accommodate 1,000 cars.
