Prague - Prague has announced an international architectural competition for the future appearance and use of Malostranské náměstí (Malostranská Square). The Institute for Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague (IPR) informed about this in a press release today. The results will be known by the end of September. The city is responding, among other things, to the resistance of some people who dislike that the ancient square under Prague Castle, dominated by the St. Nicholas Church, serves as a parking lot. "Malostranské náměstí is an extremely important space in the city," said Mayor Tomáš Hudeček (TOP 09) earlier. "We must conduct a broader discussion about it and not leave the decision-making to one official," he added. "Currently, the entire area of both the upper and lower parts of the square is occupied by parking, which is contrary to the significance and potential of the square. The space does not serve in any way as a public and representative area. There is no reason to stop and sit here," stated architect Jan Šépka from IPR. Residents around the square have compiled a petition, which has gathered 5,000 signatures. Among other things, they are calling for the removal of the parking lot and the announcement of an architectural competition. According to Prague 1, the area should become a quiet zone. The planned opening of the Blanka tunnel complex could also contribute to this. Prague is considering closing Malá Strana to transit traffic.
