Prague – The leadership of the Prague City Hall wants to grant Prague 12 120 million crowns for the construction of a new town hall. The city councilors decided on the investment subsidy, but it will still be voted on by the city assembly. The town hall was originally supposed to cost 470 million crowns, but the price has increased to 575 million. Construction began last year and is expected to be completed next year. The City Hall has previously provided the city district with an interest-free loan of 250 million crowns.
According to the approved document, the leadership of the city district failed to secure sufficient funding from the sale of assets to invest at least 220 million as originally planned. The leadership of Prague 12 offered the capital city, in exchange for the subsidy, that it would transfer part of the assets they planned to sell. "These are suitable for the implementation of investment construction or revitalization, for example, it is possible to realize the intention of residential construction here," the document states.
The offices of Prague 12 are currently located in seven buildings that are in poor technical condition. The costs of building the new town hall between Písková and Generála Šišky streets, which began in mid-last year, were originally estimated at approximately 470 million crowns, but the amount is still increasing. The building, which architects designed in the form of three sugar cubes referencing the now-defunct Modřany sugar factory, is expected to open in the middle of next year. The quarter-billion interest-free loan from the city hall must be repaid by 2036.
The historic town hall of old Modřany was demolished in the 1980s. In 2007, the leadership of the city district proposed to use the Prior building on Sofia Square for its needs. This variant was estimated to cost between 340 and 390 million crowns. Prague 12 then had an analysis prepared, which showed that the best location for the construction of the new town hall is indeed the land between Písková and Generála Šišky streets.
