Prague - Another footbridge across the Vltava, a green roof over the water line, and a new river arm are included in the proposal for the renovation of the Emperor Island, which won the competition organized by the Institute of Planning and Development of the City of Prague. It comes from the architectural office Pelčák and partners. A five-member jury chose it from five proposals, Adam Švejda from the planning institute informed ČTK. The magistrate should decide in the coming days whether it agrees with the proposal. The city plans to reconstruct the island within three years.
"The winning proposal is the most developed and the most sensitive regarding the uniqueness of the Troja basin landscape. The project supports the variability of the landscape and also naturally addresses the free flow of water during floods," commented the selection by the director of the institute and jury member Petr Hlaváček.
The transformation will take place on the largest island in Prague concurrently with the planned expansion of the wastewater treatment plant. From a permitting standpoint, an unbreakable condition is the green roof over the planned water line. The team of architect Petr Pelčák and landscape architect Eva Wagner proposes to adjust it as an open area with drought-resistant steppe grassland, which can provide refuge for rare species of plants and animals that inhabit the vicinity of the river.
The proposal also includes a footbridge that would span the Vltava from the island directly to the southern entrance of the Prague Zoo. The project also includes a transport solution for the entire area. Connectivity and permeability of the area for pedestrians and cyclists should be improved, as well as flood protection, by building a new river arm running across the island. This should naturally help divert water into the riverbed below the dam.
