Prague - Prague wants to regulate high-rise construction in the future. It is working on a manual that should establish rules for placing tall buildings in the city. The preparation will take about a year, said Jiří Skalický, the director of the municipal heritage office, in an interview with ČTK. Heritage officials have long complained about the lack of regulation.
"It is necessary to identify areas where there is no problem with placing such buildings, and where it is inappropriate," Skalický said. He did not want to be specific yet. According to him, experts will meet at the first working meeting in September. The material is expected to be part of the metropolitan land-use plan in the future.
Discussions about height regulation have been going on for several years. It is primarily urged by heritage officials, who believe that improperly placed skyscrapers spoil the appearance of the city. The most discussed plan has been to build high-rise buildings in Pankrác. UNESCO had previously expressed "serious concern" about this.
The historic center of Prague has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1992.
