Prague - Prague 3 has halted preparations for the construction of underground garages at Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, which were to cost 710 million crowns without VAT. The decision was made by the local council, as reported today by Deputy Mayor Ondřej Rut (SZ). The city hall has invested over 15 million crowns in the preparations since 2005, and the documentation for the building permit was nearing completion. The garages were to have a capacity of 400 spaces and were intended to expand the existing underground parking lot. The opposition, which previously included part of the current city hall leadership, has long criticized the project. The current council members had an analysis prepared, which identified the project as oversized and technically demanding. "Prague 3 plans to invest in the purchase of parking spaces in an existing facility at Lucemburská 28 in the coming years and will undertake renovations of the existing and currently unoccupied public garages at Vinohradská 114. These investments should meet the demand for parking in this area of Vinohrady. The construction of large-capacity garages at Jiřího z Poděbrad would be an economic gamble for the municipality," said Deputy Mayor Rut regarding the matter. The city hall also wants to prepare a complete renewal of the square. There is discussion about a proposal that originated from an architectural competition ten years ago. The reconstruction of the square should support the application for the registration of the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The adjacent intersection at U Vodárny street, which currently lacks pedestrian crossings, should also be repaired.
