Prague - The district of Prague 3 is preparing modifications to Jiřího z Poděbrad Square. The project from 2002, which won an architectural competition, has been updated according to current requirements. This was reported by the district's mayor Vladislava Hujová (TOP 09) to ČTK. This spring, Prague 3 obtained the zoning decision and is now planning to apply for a building permit.

According to the cost estimate from 2015, the cost of the modifications should be approximately 73 million crowns excluding VAT. This amount does not include the costs for the construction of new shelters and escalators to the metro vestibule and traffic modifications on Vinohradská Street. "The district of Prague 3 can’t afford to finance such a demanding reconstruction of this city-wide significant space, which is Jiřího z Poděbrad Square," stated Hujová.

Prague Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) reportedly promised that she would advocate for an amount of 80 million crowns in the budget proposal for the capital for next year. In January 2014, the previous leadership of the metropolis and the district had already signed a memorandum on mutual cooperation and support for the project.

The architectural proposal includes planting large linden and plane trees in the square and paving the area in front of the church. It will serve for social events or, for example, farmers' and other markets. The previous city council intended to start the reconstruction of the largest Žižkov square, dominated by the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord, as early as 2015.

In the past, there was talk of building a huge underground parking lot for 450 cars for 750 million crowns in connection with the modifications. However, the city council had already backed away from this plan earlier.
