Prague - Negotiations for the takeover of the former studio of sculptor Hana Wichterlová in Malá Strana by the Prague magistrate have become complicated. The local government of the first city district, which currently manages the land and the building, is demanding compensation for the transfer. According to them, the ideal solution would be for the magistrate to provide a grant for the repair of the adjacent building in exchange. This was communicated to ČTK by spokesperson for Prague 1, Veronika Blažková. As reported this week by the iRozhlas server, the Ministry of Culture granted the studio the status of a national cultural monument.
The studio is located in the garden of a block of houses on Újezd. The famous sculptor lived and created there for 50 years. The artist's family, along with part of the public and opposition in Prague 1, began to fight for the preservation of the building after the city district declared its intention to sell the entire house, including the studio. This plan ultimately fell through. The magistrate, specifically the Gallery of the Capital City, expressed interest in preserving the monument.
The land is managed by Prague 1, whose council approved the transfer of ownership to the magistrate, but "for adequate compensation." The magistrate's leadership rejected this, and the entire negotiations got stuck on the issue of compensation. According to Prague 1 councilor Tomáš Macháček (TOP 09), the local government approached the magistrate stating that it would be willing to provide the studio in exchange for a grant or funding for the reconstruction of the adjacent building. This is necessary, according to the councilor, to ensure access to the studio, which should be publicly accessible. It is still unclear whether an agreement can be reached between both parties.
Hana Wichterlová was one of the most prominent interwar sculptors. Her brother was chemist Otto Wichterle. The now dilapidated Malá Strana studio and the adjacent garden were among the favorite meeting places for Czech artists and intellectuals. The sculptor passed away in the studio in 1990.
