Polička - Polička in the Svitavy region has completed the renovation of the tower of the baroque town hall. This is the first phase of the restoration of the extensive heritage-protected building. The entire town hall will have a new facade by 2024, as stated by the city spokesperson Naděžda Šauerová.
The architectural elements on the tower and the original stucco decoration of the facade have been restored. The significantly damaged plaster has been reinforced by restorers, and numerous cracks have been filled. The tower was white, but now it is in the same colors as the town hall, with an ochre color and white stucco. The tower clock has also been repaired. The hands and numbers have been restored, and the glass in the dial has been replaced.
The city has divided the renovation of the entire town hall into three phases. The first part cost 4.7 million crowns. The Ministry of Culture and Pardubický kraj provided over a million crowns. "In addition to the restoration of the tower, an important stabilization of the damp outer walls on the ground floor also took place in the first phase," said the spokesperson.
In the coming years, the town hall will undergo the restoration of the southern and eastern facades, where the main entrance is located. The third phase will conclude with work on the northern and western sides of the facade. It will also be necessary to restore the painted town emblem on the eastern facade of the building.
"The work is expected to be completed by November 30, 2024. Until then, the town hall will be partially covered by scaffolding in the square. The estimated total cost of all three phases is 16.5 million crowns," stated Šauerová.
The Polička town hall is baroque and was completed in 1744. Part of the tower dates back to the Gothic period, probably from the time of Charles IV. The original Gothic chapel has been preserved on the first floor of the tower.
In the past, the city has also renovated other baroque monuments, including the plague column and statues at both fountains.
