Ostrava - Today, the University of Ostrava (OU) opened a new building for the Faculty of Science in Slezská Ostrava. It houses facilities for teaching biology, social and physical geography, geoecology, and other natural science subjects, as well as a specialized Center for the Study of the Impact of Environmental Technologies on the Environment. "The Faculty of Science has thus created sufficient capacity not only for education but particularly for research. This building is intended for research in the area of new technologies and their impacts on plants, animals, and also on humans," said Jiří Močkoř, rector of the University of Ostrava. Students have access to modern laboratories, classrooms, a greenhouse in the new building, and in the basement, there are laboratory spaces that will also house animals. The building includes, for example, a laboratory for physical chemistry of surfaces, a biochemistry analysis laboratory, and a laboratory for molecular biology. "There are a number of highly specialized laboratories here. Research is part of a much broader project of regional centers for the development of science and research, which we are working on in collaboration with the VŠB – Technical University," said the rector. "The Technical University will examine the technical aspects of ecological technologies, while we will analyze the impacts of these technologies on the environment, human development, and the health of the population," he added. University spokesperson Eva Kijonková stated that the construction cost approximately 180 million crowns. Most of it was paid for by the Ministry of Education, with a smaller portion from OU itself. "The advantage was that we could create exactly the spaces we need from scratch. We are now securing funds to complete the equipment," Močkoř said.
