Ostrava - Ostrava will temporarily secure and repair the roof of the building of the former historical slaughterhouse, which the city acquired last September. The costs will be approximately 200,000 crowns. The investment aims to prevent further deterioration of the building, which should become the new home for the City Gallery Plato Ostrava after extensive reconstruction. Mayor Tomáš Macura (ANO) said this to reporters today.

"The roof of the old slaughterhouse is in a state of emergency, as revealed by our latest inspections, which we conduct regularly, so we decided to carry out roof repairs knowing that it will largely be a temporary fix; we want to prevent further deterioration of the building," said Macura. The repair is expected to start in the coming days.

The monumentally protected building itself will begin repairs no earlier than next year. The historic building in the center of Ostrava will be reconstructed according to the design of Polish architect Robert Konieczny and his studio KWK Promes.

"Mr. Konieczny's Polish studio is currently processing the comments we sent him. Subsequently, based on those comments, they will develop a study that will refine the original design. Once this study is approved by the city, work on the project documentation will begin, which should be completed sometime in the autumn of this year," added Macura. This will be followed by a competition for the contractor for the reconstruction. According to Macura, the city had comments regarding the heating of the building and its connection to the surroundings.

The city slaughterhouse was established in 1881. In 1994, the city district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz sold the land covering two hectares, including the slaughterhouse, to the company Bauhaus for more than 38 million crowns. The company built a DIY store in close proximity to the slaughterhouse. However, the slaughterhouse fell into disrepair and the store ceased operations. The city has long sought to regain the monumentally protected slaughterhouse. It paid 80 million crowns for it and for the former Bauhaus store, temporarily housing the Plato Gallery.
