Ostrava - A reconstructed street, October 28, opened today in the center of Ostrava, which is one of the access roads to the main Masaryk Square. The repair cost approximately 28 million crowns, and the majority of the expenses will be covered by the city district with the help of European funds. This was stated by city hall spokesperson Jana Pondělíčková.

The builders repaired October 28 Street in the section from Masaryk Square to Smetana Square. "The reconstruction required the relocation of a water supply, the reconstruction of part of the sewer system, and the relocation of part of the low-voltage line. An archaeological survey was also conducted by the National Heritage Institute, as the street is located in a heritage zone," said Pondělíčková.

The street, now with a new surface made of granite paving stones and blocks, is lined with benches, trees, and public lighting pillars. "A unique feature is the rail memorial with a historical stop sign. There are 21 mature maples, 20 new benches made of blasted granite with tropical wooden seating, and 49 independently standing regulatory posts bearing the coat of arms of the city of Ostrava, which visually separate the sidewalks from the roadway. There are also 16 cast-iron posts equipped with metal trash cans. The street also includes three bicycle racks and eight illuminated advertising boxes of the Citylight type," added the spokesperson.

The modernization is this year's largest investment project of the Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz city district. The repair of the area was about a month delayed, due to the archaeological survey and a greater scope of earthworks than originally expected.

"The renovation is significant not only for the district but I think for the whole city. It has not been addressed for many years. I expect revitalization from it and that the empty storefronts will soon be filled. I believe this is the first step to be taken with the center," stated Deputy Mayor Dalibor Mouka (Ostravak). In the future, for example, Christmas markets could also expand in the street, which this year will be held not only on Masaryk Square but also on the neighboring Jirásek Square.

Mayor Tomáš Macura (ANO) hinted today that he can envision further expansion of the markets in the future, which would grow further into the access streets to the city center. "We have already started the development of the Christmas markets this year. Now, with the beautiful street October 28, which is wide, we expect this expansion, but it also depends on the demand from the sellers," added the Deputy Mayor.
